Studio Scale UFO escape pod

$

With my love of UFO I wanted to do as many models as I can.
So this time around I am making the Studio Scale UFO escape pod.
I got all the kit parts for the master, so! let's do this.
I molded up a 6" plastruct dome and 4 AirFix b-29 parts.
Also some 1 1/2" acrylic balls.
There are a few more model kit parts to mold up this weekend.

A question about the Maxi-brute X-Wing.

So I have started to work on some of my old X-Wings my old CC kit and I also decided to do something with my Maxi Brute. I have heard people say this is a very accurart fusalage So my question is about the area just before the hump on the rear fuselage. I can see a sort of dimand shape area on the Maxi Brute. Is this the way this area is supposed to look on all X-Wings? I can kind of feel this area on my old explosive casting but not see it. Was this common to all or just a few of the filming models? I have not seen this feature on any other models i have of the X-Wing. Thought I do not have any of the Salzo models.

32'' Millennium Falcon photogrammetry.

A long time ago I've posted a thread about reconstructing the 32'' Millennium Falcon studio model.
I've finally caught enough free time (and unearthed enough reference photos) to work some more on it, and here are some results.
The preliminary reconstruction of the top is done, I'm working on the bottom (a bit harder, as there are less photos available).
This project will take a long time though, as I have little free time. I will post more as I go along.

Hasbro X Wing Upgrade Set

$

Seeing all the posts on forums regarding the Hasbro Falcon I thought I'd do one for the big X Wing they do.
I'm going to make a upgrade set for it to replace the wings, air intakes, engines and laser cannons.
Here is the work so far.

Finished another part for the X wing.
These go on the outside of the laser cannons. The actual kit part is on the left (from a Salzo x wing). I know its not 100% but it's close enough I think. It's made up of 13 individual parts.

Here it is with a bit of primer on

and a picture for size reference.

Just completed the laser canon for the Hasbro X Wing upgrade set.
Complete with 3d printed replica of the heatsink used on the real ones

I found the center piece, but am having trouble identifying the two, squares just to the left of it. They look like tiny engine pieces, but could be some thing else.

Thanks! :)

Constellation Class U.S.S. Stargazer daydreaming

$

Sorry for the stupid throwaway thread, but... ;) For a few years now I've been kicking around the idea of building Picard's U.S.S. Stargazer from the 1/350 Polar Lights TMP Enterprise parts. Looking recently at some measurements and comparing to known donor parts (specifically the 1/72 IMAI VF-1 Valkyries), I believe the the Polar Lights parts would be pretty close to studio scale. Has anyone seen anyone attempt this build? This is mostly daydreaming on my part, I'm not sure that I'm ready to undertake this huge project just now (nor whether I want to sacrifice both of my Polar Lights kits!).

I'm going to work on the bandai AT-ST soon. So I would like to ask this question to AT-ST experts.
Maybe ILM used the same AT-ST, but repaint it on the front to differentiate them. Am I right?

5 Foot Millennium Falcon markings survey

$

All, just in case anyone missed the thread over in General Modeling, there is a thread working to document all the markings applied to the 5-foot MF and provide artifacts useful to anyone making a replica of that filming model. The thread name is somewhat confusing as it was started with a request to help validate retiredadguy's decal artwork project - hence my sticking this here. ;^)

Please feel free to check it out, and contribute if you can; the artifacts are currently published through my model club's website at Hampton Roads Scale Modelers

Well thought I'd go ahead and build a Naked Falcon, ;) After the great thread by Andre and Maruska, I had to see how big this bird will actually be. I figure if it doesn't work out, I can always turn it upside down and make a bird bath, LOL. If I get it right, I can add detail as I buy kits. I started by making a 79.05 inch trammel to draw the curve of the hull. That would be one humongous sphere if you had the whole thing. I started thinking of all kinds of router jigs and such to carve the shape, but ended up putting on my sculpting hat. The only thing I hate more than sculpting, is painting , yuck ! Sorry about the picture quality, camera is old and on the fritz.

Then I had to make another piece just like the first and glue them together. With the two 1/8 slices together I now had a 1/4 hull section.

I couldn't get it perfect by hand, so I made a jig I call the "Blade". It's a scrap piece of 1/2 inch Mdf cut to the exact hull curve. I epoxied a piece of brass tube that can pivot on a bolt. I then glued on a strip of 100 grit sandpaper to the bottom of the "blade". By sweeping back and forth it sands the wedge to exact shape. It's hard to describe so here's some pics.

Now I'm just waiting for some resin and glass to harden up this puppy. Figure I'll glass it and pull a mold. Then I can cast up sections to piece together. I may end up making a half hull mold. I'll see how it works out. Should have my supplies in a week or so. To be continued........

Cheers,

Joe

Hadn't seen a post about this before. Apparently Kubrick gave it to a friend after filming where it stayed in secret until now. It's in L.A. now and up for auction at icollector.com.
Some members of the studio scale modeling crowd are going to see it today to verify if it's the real thing. Let's hope so

It's all over facebook now. Someone has made a public imgur album full of never-ever before seen slide scans of pictures from Blade Runner Model shop. 90% of this material has over 150 images never been seen before. This is even bigger than the pics posted in Doug Trumbull's, as you have many closeups of each specific models: Hero Spinner, 12" Spinner, the Alfa Romeo Spinner, the Lobster Spinner, the Truck, Tyrell's pyramid, Tyrell's pyramid landing pad, the Blimp... all cristal clear.

S.H.I.E.L.D HELICARRIER 7'x4'

$

I'm looking for help and ideas on how to build a 7'x4' physical model of the S.H.I.E.L.D Helicarrier for my Avengers themed media room. The Helicarrier will hold all electronics, blu rays, DVDs, CDs, etc. I have a CNC machine and 3D printer at my disposal. I found a plastic model of the helicarrier that I can 3d scan and use as a base however it isn't very detailed. Given the size that I want to make this I would like the model to be extremely detailed. I have a pretty good idea on how to physically make it and able to hold all of my components. I'm looking for someone crazy enough to build the model and I'll make a second one, or if this turns out to be a multiple person deal we can work out something.

Satyr's DeAgostini Millenium Falcon Build Log

If you don't know about this kit, or haven't heard about this kit by now then you are either not a model builder, not a Star Wars fan, or DEAD. In any event this kit is the talk of the entire modelling community. And guess what... I've got it! For those that truly don't know... there's a kit company out of the UK called DeAgostini. They have basically focused on wooden ships, race cars, motorcycles, etc. They've been around for over 100 years. Anyway, the models they produce aren't your typical injected plastic mold kits. No... the models they produce are musuem quality multi-media kits that are completely accurate to the originals only at scale! Now, the way they sell their kits is kind of unique to me, seeing as I've spent most of my life buying kits in boxes off the shelf and then building and getting extra parts and modifying etc. Well, how they sell their kits is in part packs that are included with a magazine in a subscription form. What this means is that you subscribe to receive their magazine and for each issue of the magazine you receive a pack of parts. Each pack allows you to usually build a section of the completed model. When you've gotten all the issues you have a complete model kit. They usually include all the tools you will need and there's always room for customization.

Now... recently they wanted to get into the sci-fi realm and immediately thought about doing a Millenium Falcon. So they tested the waters so to speak and produced a few early test packs. What they didn't expect was the popularity and the criticism for the lack of and/or the inaccuracy of detail the parts they had made. So, they contacted Steve Dymszo (you know the guy who co-founded Master Replicas) and asked for his help.

Well... Steve said sure, and being as OCD as most of us around here, he gave them a hand, because secretly there were alot of things he wanted to do with the MR Falcon but didn't get a chance to do, as well as fix all the "missing" or "broken off" pieces that were left off the original 32" Studio Falcon scans that he and his company did for the MR. But he took it a step further... he also included an interior and and fully accurate cockpit. But there's alot more then that as well. Best way to think of this version is "MR Falcon v2.0"!

Well the thing that probably kept me from getting all the Falcon's before was probably the price... the MR Falcon was going for anywhere from $5000 to $8000, the Fine Molds Falcon was going for $250 but after shipping costs from Japan closer to $350. The Hasbro Legacy Falcon was selling in Walmart for $150. But now you can't buy these things anymore because they don't produce them anymore. You might be able to find one on eBay but you may want to double or even triple the original price if you find one.

Recently they came out with the Hasbro Hero Falcon for $30... I grabbed one. It's got alot of good detail, but it's also missing alot more. Just the scratch building and modifications alone on it would take a good long time to get to look semi decent. However, now we've got the DeAgostini Falcon. And wait til you get a load of this beauty!

I wasn't going to pass up another opportunity to get a good quality Falcon again... and I'm glad I didn't. I just got my first month's worth of parts and I gotta say I am blown away by the detail on this thing. You can go online and look at photos of the original 32" inch Falcon and compare the pieces and it will be difficult to spot anything missing. All the parts are prepainted based on the Pantone scans of the original Falcon. It's almost as if Lucasfilm produced a model... it's that good.

Now... what made me buy this thing? Well first off it's not cheap... The entire subscription ends up after shipping ends up being around $1500-$1800 bucks... however, it's monthly charge for 4 magazines (with parts) a month spread out over a period of 2 years (25 months). So that works out to about $15 an issue or $60 a month. I've put stuff on layway that was more expensive then that. Now I don't know about you, but that's a pretty darn good deal seeing as the original MR Falcon was selling for $5000 and this is basically MR Falcon v2.0! I can go without having to eat fast food for awhile (I'm sure my gut will appreciate it).

Now that I got this first pack in my grubby little mitts, I am gonna make sure I do it right. I want to be able to pass this on to my grandchildren and their grandchildren for years to come. I want this to be my MASTERPIECE. Over the next few months I'm going to take my time and post my progress on it. I hope you all enjoy it and if you get a chance I highly recommend picking one up before you kick yourself for not doing so later! Here's a few pics of what I've gotten so keep the drool off your keyboard! What you get with each pack is a Magazine, and he first issue contained a full scale 1:1 blueprint as well as complete frame plans on the back. The pics below show the first 4 packs I received.
