Jedi Training Remote

The following will document the trials and tribulations of building the jedi training remote from ANH. A lot has gone wrong along the way and i have learned a great deal, hopefully this will help others who are contemplating this undertaking and labor of love! I am not new to modeling or prop building but this build sure made it seem that way!

I used the resources here on the RPF extensively and found that two threads really helped me along the way. @TheRealMcFly has a great thread that discusses every aspect of the project start to finish and was a huge help

https://www.therpf.com/showthread.php?t=42132

The other thread is by @KrokoHunter who described a great method for cutting out the circular styrene pieces around the truck rims.

https://www.therpf.com/showthread.php?t=150843

I started collecting the required parts for this project more than two years ago and started building about a year ago, of course life has intervened along the way like buying a new house, switching jobs and having another kid but hey whats life without a challenge. Needless to say this has been a slow burn but i am also determined not to rush it, here we go.

The parts:

I wont go too deep into the parts because they are discussed in depth in the threads linked above.

Model parts

1/25 AMT Midnight Express - has all the chrome wheels required but not the axle brackets
1/48 Fuman Panther G - Cupola, treads, gun port, commander's hatch, muffler baffle, part #3
1/72 Airfix Panzer IV - Track rollers
1/72 Hasegawa M-4 Sherman- wheel parts

Other:

Plastruct 6" hemispheres - I used the grey ABS for workability instead of the clear
1mm Styrene
Scotchlite
Oomoo 30 silicone rubber and smoothcast 300 liquid plastic

The first thing I did was to mold the parts that I needed multiple of. This was a first for me and I found that i was quickly out of my comfort zone because my molds were full of bubbles and resulted in unusable parts. DaveG made a great tutorial about how he molds small parts which was a huge help.

https://www.therpf.com/showthread.php?t=264222

The next round of molding i prepared better and purchased a vacuum chamber which resulted in perfect molds. I used mostly a couple of block molds but i made a two part mold the cupola and gunport in order to maintain the look of the original parts.

Molding and casting tips learned from failure:

-follow DavG's tutorial
-use a vacuum chamber. even though oomoo says its not necessary these small parts will always have bubbles if you dont vacuum the silicone
-DONT USE SILICONE MOLD RELEASE FOR 2 PARTS MOLDS. this was a dumb one. This actually means the release is made from silicone, not that it should be used on silicone. the only thing that sticks to silicone is silicone so using this release was like gluing the halves together and actually made my 2 part mold into a solid block!!! use mann 200, thats the good stuff.
-use new bottles of smoothon 300. if it sits on the shelf too long it forms a lot of bubbles.
-lightly spray mold release on the molds prior to casting then dust on talc powder, this will draw the resin into the small parts
-dont rush it

After all of the molding and casting you will have a work bench that looks like this. Ill discuss the sphere and the other styrene parts next.

A L I E N Narcissus

$

I am currently working on a digital model of the studio scale Narcissus from the 1979 Alien movie and thought I might share some of my work.

I have spent the past few years collecting reference images and information and I now think I am at the point where I have the info I need to create a very exact replica.

The initial issue with trying to build this particular model is that of reference.
The ship went was meant to go over to the US for display with a number of other models and props to promote the movie, but before it even left it went "missing" and was never seen again.
This means that there is a zero possiblity of getting any photos or reference that aren't at least 30 odd years old now.
Thankfully, the guys in the model shop were pretty keen to document thier work and there are dozens of WIP photos "out there".
I have been scouring the net for the past few years and have what I believe are all the publically available references.

For this build, I want to make it as accurate to the original as humanly possible.
After seeing a number of projects utilising photogrammetry, I was keen to see if I could use the technology for this build. Unfortunately, with the model no longer around and the existing photos not of a high enough quality and quantity to be usable and the fact that they are film based images (which have probably been scanned/cropped/modified), it means that it is just not a viable option.

I took another approach... I built a base 3D model, and then used the known kit parts as reference for the initial scaling. Once this was done, I then imported the model into sketchup and attempted to match the exact angle and focal length of the photos to the model (using it's rather niffty "photomatch" utility). Having done this, it was then a matter of tweaking the model a fraction of a mm at a time and re-matching it to the photos. All sounds simple, but I have "tweaked" hundreds of "versions" of the model now over the past year, BUT I do have it matched very closely to 24 separate reference images. As it current sits, this is only for the main "body" of the ship, but its amazing how much I am able to pick up regarding its geometry and how it was constructed. You can see areas of the model which should be symetrical, but clearly were not - not surprising considering this is a hand fabricated model made 30 years ago!. BUT, this technique will allow me to match even these "oddities" exactly.

Now that the main body is complete/matched, it is now a fairly simple (if time consuming) exersize of adding all the styrene/plasticard and kit parts to the model and adjusting the sizing and positions to align with the reference photos.
When it's done, I don't believe it would be possible to get it any more accurate without actually having access to the original model.

Some screen shots of the 3D model (in yellow) photo matched and overlayed on the reference photos to illustrate:

New to modeling Star Wars Laser Tower from David Goldberg

Hi All,
Thanks for let me join the forum, I'm new to this hobby which I really like it. I have been working on the Star Wars Laser Tower from David Goldberg which is pretty amazing. I have complete some of the steps he mention on his blog however I'm kind of lost since I don't have reference on the parts he use for the rails on this model. I have tried to search some more on his work but nothing came out as a good reference.
The stuff I have accomplished is made by styrene, is not full size as his model but my cutting machine cannot go that big. Has anyone has more reference on how to process with this model? as he mention this forum on his blog

Thanks!

Was a bit bored so I decided to annotate this picture from the 365 days of star wars book. To know that the whole universe was mostly just populated by these is mind blowing.
There are som models I couldn't find like the At-Ats, sandcrawler, speeders, some pods, slave 1 and a couple of TIEs, Ys and Xs, but the bulk of what they had to work with on ROTJ is clearly there. Also note the 3 MPC Falcons, 2 MPC X-wings and bunch of Kenner Die-casts. Maybe just used for video-storyboarding but still...
Please correct me if I got something wrong or if somebody spots something else.

Thanks for looking!

Hey everyone! I just got an EFX TIE fighter, but the screws for the wings were missing. Does anyone happen to know the exact size of screw/bolt I need to buy to attach these babies so my panels will stay put? I’d hate to break it!!! Or better yet, if anyone has an extra pair they’d like to part with?

Thanks!!!

Artoo replica from a '76 Pyro X-Wing

This is very small, and was VERY easy to build (haha). My replica of a recently un-earthed Artoo top that was rescued from a Pyro X-Wing by an ILMer in 1976, painted on a casting pulled from a casting from the original ILM mold (you lost yet? lol). From the neck down is alllll made up - the full Artoos were only used as the top mount plugs on the Hero X-Wings as y'all know.
I hope to one day see a pic that shows which X-Wing this fella was paired to! He may even show up in a Y-Wing, but the chances are slim... about as slim as seeing this fella in situ. Anyway, fun little oddity.

TIE Advanced X-1

Hey guys, I just ordered up a TIE advanced from Steve and was wondering if there is anyone out there who got one and actually built it. I imagine as it is CAD created, it should go together pretty smoothly, but every build has a hiccup, and as this is my final Studio Scale build ( the fighters from 'A New Hope" are all in my collection, and 2 are actually on display!, Y-wing on bench). Mr. Eaton started a thread, but I believe he got caught up in other builds. Any insight is appreciated and I will use this as my build thread. Thanks in advance.

I noticed the thread of Steve Niesen with the list of members to whch he ownes stuff has been removed.
I was wondering why!?
Steve still ownes me Stuff till this day.
I was on that list and i would appreciated it if that thread stays up till i receive my stuff.
Maybe the mods can explain what happened?

Long Story short, this is owned by a private collector and on display in his cinema. He has had it so long he is not sure of the actual movie it is from. All his stuff is tagged usually, but this one is not. It is not from 2001 - that we are sure of. I think I can recall seeing this in a movie - but I suck at remembering names..lol. It is currently hanging about 20 feet in the air, so no easy way to get more detail (for now). All the rigging and electrical is still in it. Give it power it lights up. Any ideas what movie? Thanks!

Skagra's Ship from DR WHO Season 17

Hi all. Third attempt to start this thread as I got bombed out yet again. I was going to start this after the New Year, but was told by another member, that I had to do it NOW!:lol

This is a build that I did for this years Secret Santa Gift Exchange and my recipient listed quite a few likes, and it was "Ok, where do I start?". Well, after narrowing it down, I went with option 2 as I felt that making and shipping a fire extinguisher through the Mail at this time of year, might not be a good idea:lol.
So, the next step was to decide on a gift that he might not have and one that I would enjoy doing. I went through my Reference Library and found the perfect book.

I then thumbed through the pages and found this subject. I looked at it and decided that it had nice lines and wouldn't take long to build, as I pretty much had a week to get it done and off to the Post Office.

I then went on-line and found some really good pictures of the 'Mid Scale Version" which was about 91/2" in length or 245mm to me. Using these images, I made a start by working out what size tubing would be needed and whether to go with Plastic or Aluminium. I was talking to Blaxmyth and he said that he had some Aluminium tube in his garage and to come round and have a look. So, loaded with my reference material, I headed round there and I started by cutting up the pieces on his bandsaw once I worked out the length of each piece.

Devastator parts

I'm not sure if this is the best place to ask so please don't shoot me down in flames. Does anyone know where I would be able to buy resin casts of the popular parts used to detail the Devastator Star Destroyer please ?
I'm planning to make a start on my favourite imperial vessel and have some kits on the way.

I'm a newbie when it comes to this sort of thing.

Information about Imperial Star Destroyer from Star Wars

Hi Everyone !

I'm french, so sorry about my English !

I recently built the Zvezda's ISD model kit. But I notice that the model is better than the old Mpc/ertl but not exactly as the original from Empire strike back movie.

I want to build an 1/2 model (arround 120cm). So now I'm looking for information to draw a correct design. I've a lot of picture, because I had the opportunity to see the real destroyer at an exposition 2 years ago, and a few book as Chronicles and Peterson's book... but I can't extract the reals dimensions.

All blueprints and design from Essential Guide, Web, Zvezda models are wrong... Why ?

It's difficult for me to draw Something from a picture. I don't have 3D software : just Photoshop !

For example:
- How's the height of the trench (2,54cm or 3cm) ?
- What are the correct dimensions (2,59m x 1,37m x 0,71m as they say in Chronicles) ?
- At starboard superstructure, you can see hull sides of CV65 Enterprise and CV68 Nimitz, but from different scales: what are they ?

If someone have any information, I'll be very happy !

I've seen the McQuarrie concept/TLJ 1:24 A-wing kit, but I've never seen any of the ROTJ A-wings available. Is anyone aware of a kit producer that does an a-wing at 1:24?

Just realized that this might be the wrong forum for this question seeing that the ROTJ a-wing studio scale model is much larger than 1:24

Studio scale A-wing kit ?

Hello everyone,

I was wondering if anyone ever produced a studio scale A-wing (large one) kit. I have been doing some research, including on this forum, and all the studio scale models I found were scratch built. I found about a 1/24 kit, which I would be interested in too, but not as much as the real thing, which is much bigger. I have only been into the studio scale thing for a couple of years, so I'm not as knowledgeable as some people people here, so I could have easily missed it.

Also, while during my searching, I found this, a 1/24 episode 7 xwing: http://www.modelermagic.com/?p=94225
Anyone heard about this kit? is it any good? Obsiously, I know it can't be actual studio scale, since there were no filming miniature, but it would be nice to have one matching the original. I remember someone startedscratch building a 1/24 a while back, but I don't know if he finished it
