A great time was had by all this weekend in Whippany New Jersey. Here's some pics (there's a ton more from other people floating around as well):

Not only were there wonderful resin cast replicas:

But also complete ground up scratch builds in attendance like the Skyhopper, and in-progress scratch builds like this baby:

It was a great weekend with friends old and new, and lots of model talk. I really recommend attending if you get the chance!

Y-Wing Identification Thread

Okay, let's get this forum into shape! Here's placeholders, for IDing all the Y-Wings out there. As we get better pics gathered, I can amend this first post, and make it more concise and comprehensive.

The first pass at a Y-Wing. Colin Cantwell, 1975.

The first ILM Y-Wing, December 1975. Red Leader (also known as "Red Jammer"), this model was sent in an incomplete state to Elstree for the prop builders to blueprint and mock up the 1:1 set piece. It was returned at some indeterminate point, finished, but as far as we know never saw screen time.

Gold Leader (also known as "TIE Killer"). Survived ANH filming and was passed into private hands, for the most part untouched since filming. Was not available for the ESB or ROTJ production from what we can tell.

Alan Ladd Jr Y-Wing, aka "Tiger Sprockets". This ANH Y-Wing was gifted to Alan Ladd Jr after ANH wrapped, and now resides with the owner of Prop Store. This is perhaps the best preserved example of an ANH filming Y-Wing.

The Bill George ROTJ Y-Wing. Built by Mr George (apparently post ANH and some say it was part of his "portfolio" that got him a job at ILM), from very little reference, when he was a young man. Years later when he was on the ROTJ production, this personal model was pressed into service, and now is a permanent Archive resident. This is unlike ALL the other Y-Wings in dims and many parts, and has an R5 unit in the Droid socket.

What the hell Happened???

Hi guys.
What the hell happened?

I see that a few have been banned like Julien and that Mike S has left the RPF???
I thought that kind of Hobby was meant to reunite people....
I should not be that surprised after seeing again some stupid comments on who did what on this or that.

I personnaly think that is a sad day for Studio scale hobbyists on theRPF!
We've lost Julien who whatever we can say was always giving us the absolute answer on what part or measures to play with and Mike who made possible to a lot of us who do not have the same talent to have access to amazing quality studio scale kits.

Death Star ANH Docking Bay Gantry

This is a replica of the rust colored gantry built by Jon Erland. Lorne built a replica Dykstraflex (complete with track!) that also hung above on the hangar's ceiling, so that'll be next I guess. In the mean time, I am going as best I can from ONE behind the scenes photo I was given that shows the model being constructed. It is at an oblique angle, but there are enough kit parts to probably get within 10mm or so, over all, on the dimensions. It's mostly 1/48 Bandai Panther G and 1/15 Bandai, and about $50 to $75 in Plastruct. I am still "early days" on this one, but if it all lines up and I don't have to rip stuff out, I will call it done and share measurements and Plastruct codes, in case you want to make one too. It's a weird one, but I like the stuff no one has ever made, lately.

Here it is, in the upper right in this photo:

How about a thread where we share the stuff we like to buy that seems universally useful for these models?

Like the Panavise mounts. I like the 883-T, as it extends and offers more versatility.

Also, I have 200 of these Aavid 323005B00000G heatsinks coming tomorrow... lol. I should be set for EVERYTHING for me and a buddy, now, for all the stuff planned. I had a bag of what was probably close to 50, bought ages ago back when they were a LOT cheaper, and over the years I finally used them all on commissions and my own builds. Each X-Wing needs at least 12, and boy does that add up.

Bolts from Ace hardware for the machined X-Wing armatures - 3/8" coarse all thread.
For the TIE Fighter - 1/2-20 FINE thread. (hard to find the fine thread at a Home Depot)

What else do you all feel like you have to keep buying over and over?

Star Wars decals - my source art

Can I attach an Illustrator file? Gonna try.

decals.ai

This is an .ai file of all the art I drew for the following:

Blue 1/Red 2 X-Wing
Skyhopper
Pyro X-Wings
Escape Pod
TIEs (ANH) and Vader TIE
B-Wings

I make no guarantees these will fit - they were my best guess at the time. I know the B-Wing ones are missing a few, and they were sized to fit the Frank and Moe models. But these will give y'all a jumping off point.

Everything is sized to the scale ILM made them in.

Hi all! Long time reader, first time poster.

I've built a full size r2, and am knee deep building bb8. I've always wanted to make a studio scale star destroyer. I'd like to go the route of 3D printing. Are there any other projects doing this? I haven't found one.

If no others, is there interest in modeling all the little greebles and overall body with me? My goal would be to have it light up with fiber optics. I did a similar smaller model before, but now I want BIGGER!

Scale Blues Mobile

Hi All,

I'm new to RPF and am hoping you can help me out!

I have a scale model of the Blues Mobile. It's about 5' long and made of fiberglass. This model was used in the scene where the car flips end over end.

How did I get this? Well my dad did the Special Effects for Blues Brothers!

Now, here's the sad part...the model is damaged. My dad cut off the roof (that was damaged) and he turned it into a toy for my brother and I. We sat in it and had lots of fun. But now that I'm older, I want to restore this Blues Mobile to its original glory!

I've done some searching and found a few forums. From what I can tell about 4-5 of these cars exist.

I'm going to need help rebuilding the roof section (specifically getting the scale right).

I'll be posting photos soon. I've heard great things about RPF and look forward to any advice from the community!

Thanks in advance!

Large Scale TOS Enterprise Kit

Hi Everyone. I wanted to share some pics of the prototype of my large scale Enterprise that I intend to kit (in small numbers). The model is right about 71" in length. The primary hull is laid up in 4 layers of carbon fiber that is done through a vacuum bag infusion process. The saucer you see is from the actual parts our of the mold. The rest of the parts are all casting masters that have yet to be created. The entire hull will be carbon fiber including the nacelles. It will be quite light for its size but but very rigid and stable. all of the detail components will be either cast resin parts or in some cases 3D printed such as the bridge and shuttle bay.Click image for larger version.

Part Cast Exchange for the Green Leader Project!

$
0
0
Hello All- Given the cost involved and rarity of some of the donor kits required for those doing the Green Leader Project, why not do a resin cast part exchange for some these to help with the cost? I believe Masterpiece Models will have some of the parts coming out soon based on MoffEaton's generous donation of rare (or expensive) finds which will be an awesome resource, but there are a ton of parts on this thing so I propose that those of us who can cast and have some of the kits, let's pool our resources and try swap casts. As general practice, about every month, a o through the donor kits I have, match them to the kit ID's and I go ahead and make a mold and casts so I have spares. Whenever I don't I screw an original up, and have to go back to EBAY!

Sooooo, I'll kick it off with my lists of HAVES and WANTS, and you guys jump in if you want to take part in it. Please note that this isn't a parts run or builders kit run by any means. I'm not set up for that kind of production and time is precious, but if anyone else is of the same frame of mind for swapping casts, perhaps we can pool resources and take some of the burn out of gathering parts. I won't name all the parts, but if you are following Scott Graham, Dave G, and Big Dog's threads, you will have a good idea what parts are what.

"Tie Killer" Y-Wing Based on Dave G Open Source

$

Well, I was a little nervous about jumping into this project because of the time, financial commitment, and my lack of patience. My intent is to reproduce my favorite Y-wing, Gold Leader or "Tie Killer". I was torn between doing this Y and the "MOM" Y or whatever it's called now a days. The fact that this bird saw screen time was the deciding factor on which way to go for me. I know that it will take me a very long time to complete this based on how many parts I still need and more specifically Tie Killer specific parts that I still need. Needless to say I've been blown away by the support and sharing of RPF members with your generosity and reaching out to help me and others. You know who you are.

I've started some part maps that are "Tie Killer" specific. As of now they are just a start with some areas of the ship I haven't even explored yet. The intent is to identify parts or configurations specific to this bird. the good news is I keep finding new parts all the time which is really exciting for me. Please feel free to chime in with any knowledge, corrections, or identifications that others may know. I don't claim to be any sort of expert, just a passionate model builder. I'll add more maps and identifications and corrections as I go. These photos are taken from publicly posted photos on Flickr of the Neisen Tie Killer that were displayed publicly a while back.

Right now I'm in the process of mocking the ship up to see how it looks and how everything will fit based on the marriage of 3D design and model kit parts. Not much is actually glued together yet, hence all the tape holding it together. Iv'e been modding the upper neck, slightly widening it so the 8rad side walls will fit properly, redoing the droid socket to fit the astromech more snug, extending the droid socket back, and lowering the very back so the Sealab tubes will fit in the crevice.Still need to sand it up better.
